From the Cabin to the Classroom to the Stage

About Bernadette Callaghan, PhD

Speaker | Mental Health Therapist | Performance Psychologist

Bernadette Callaghan believes it is never too late to reinvent yourself, embrace change, or discover a new purpose. After a 25-year career as a flight attendant, the events of September 11, 2001 led her to reconsider her path. At age 50 she began college, and she went on to earn a PhD in Performance Psychology from Grand Canyon University. Her story reflects the philosophy she brings to everything she does: our past helps shape who we are, but it does not have to define who we become.

Her work as a therapist

At Thrive Counseling Center, Bernadette offers a warm, compassionate, humanistic approach to individual and couples therapy. She is a trauma-certified professional and addiction specialist who helps people through anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, life transitions, and emotional challenges. She is also the developer of a relationship-resolution approach that helps couples communicate better, work through conflict, and build healthier connections.

Her research

Her doctoral training focuses on how motivation, resilience, mindset, and emotional regulation shape our ability to face challenges and thrive. Her research explored how mental health therapists sustain their well-being and reduce professional burnout.

Her speaking

Bernadette speaks to healthcare professionals, university students, corporate teams, women’s organizations, and anyone beginning a new chapter. She offers keynotes, conference sessions, and workshops on reinvention, burnout, resilience, and human connection. Her talks draw on research and lived experience, and they include humor, because she believes laughter can offer perspective and remind us that joy is possible even in hard times.

Beyond the work

Bernadette has been married for 38 years and is the proud mother of three grown sons.

Her philosophy is simple: it’s never too late to begin again, become who you want to be, and perhaps find a little laughter along the way.
